In this inspiring and visually rich presentation, environmental artist Mara G. Haseltine shares her groundbreaking work at the intersection of art, science, and regenerative design. Blueprints to Heal the Planet: I — Coral Reefs introduces a new paradigm in which artistic creativity becomes a catalyst for ecological restoration, community resilience, and ocean healing.
Drawing from years of fieldwork with marine scientists, engineers, and coastal communities—most recently at Laguna de Maya in Cuba—Haseltine demonstrates how art can function as a powerful tool for nature-based solutions to coral reef decline. From ceramic substrates inspired by sacred cosmology and coral larval propagation to BioRock structures and community-driven reef nurseries, her work illustrates how sculpture, science, storytelling, and local knowledge intertwine to create living, thriving underwater ecosystems.
Haseltine will also introduce the vision behind the Geotherapy Institute for Art and Field Sciences, an initiative dedicated to creating large-scale ecological artworks that double as functional habitat, carbon sinks, and educational platforms. While rooted in place-based collaborations, the principles behind this work remain universal—offering a replicable blueprint for artists, scientists, policymakers, and communities seeking to restore reefs and re-build coastal futures.
This talk invites EarthX audiences to imagine a world where art does not simply reflect nature, but actively participates in healing it.
