Dr. Luis Ortiz serves as the Deputy Director for Commercialization at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E). Prior to joining ARPA-E, he co‑founded and served as CEO of Avanti Battery Company, which is commercializing a low-cost, long-duration aluminum battery technology developed at MIT to help decarbonize the electricity grid.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Ortiz served as Vice President at Anbaric, an energy infrastructure project developer, where he initially focused on microgrids before leading the development of the company’s front-of-the-meter storage business. Prior to Anbaric, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Solar Grid Storage (SGS). Dr. Ortiz is also the co‑founder and former President of Ambri (formerly known as Liquid Metal Battery Corporation), a late‑stage battery startup working to revolutionize grid‑scale electricity. From 2008-2011, Dr. Ortiz served as the Research Director of GroupSadoway at MIT.
Luis received his Bachelor’s in Materials Science and Engineering and Doctorate of Materials Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
