Mike received his 4-year degree in Meteorology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.  
Mike began his career in 1976 at WKOW-TV and Weather Central in Madison, WI  
Mike has received 20 Emmy awards for outstanding work in television weather broadcasting 
Mike Nelson served as Chief Meteorologist for Denver7 from 2004 - 2024
Prior to his position at Denver7, Nelson was Chief Meteorologist for KUSA-TV from 1991 to 2004 
In 1985, Mike served as Chief Meteorologist at KMOV-TV until 1991. In 2001, he was recognized by the Colorado Broadcasters Association as their "Citizen of the Year" for his volunteer work in Colorado schools
He has spoken to over one million kids, many clubs, and service organizations since the start of his career. His Tornado Dance  is a much anticipated event! 
In 2016, Mike was inducted into the “Silver Circle” – recognizing 25 years of Broadcast Excellence and Community Service in Colorado
Mike has written two books on Colorado weather: Colorado Weather, and Colorado Almanac
The World’s Littlest Book on Climate: 10 Facts in 10 Minutes written by Mike Nelson, Dr. Pieter Tans and Michael Banks is in its second edition
In 2019, Mike was named a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). The only Colorado TV Meteorologist ever to be so honored
October 2023, Mike was inducted into the Denver Press Club Hall of Fame; the first and only meteorologist to receive this honor
December 12, 2024, Mike retired from television to pursue other ventures in renewable energy and climate change
Mike and his wife, Cindy, have two grown children and three grandkids: all live in Colorado
